A Valentine’s Day Survival Guide for Couples

January 9, 2012

With Valentines Day right around the corner, I thought this would be a good time to send out some Valentines Day etiquette tips that will ensure a romantic evening (and keep everyone out of the dog house!)

  1. Turn your cell phones off: It goes without saying that you should give your date your undivided attention at all times, and most especially on such a romantic day as Valentine’s Day. Gentlemen: turn your cell phones off—and leave them off the table–so you’re not tempted to check sports scores during dinner.
  2. Buy a card early: Don’t wait until the day before Valentine’s Day, when all the cards are picked over, to choose a card. Shop early and pick a card that shares the sentiment you want to share with your spouse or significant other.
  3. Make a reservation, early: If you’re going to dinner, make reservations well in advance of the special day, to increase your chances of getting a good table with the best view, away from the kitchen and the restrooms. Most restaurants book up weeks before Valentines Day.
  4. Mind your table manners: As with any time you’re sharing a meal with someone, be sure to bring along your best table manners. Chewing with your mouth open or shoveling food into your mouth is NOT romantic.
  5. For the men: Remember the simple things, like opening the door for you’re her, helping her with her coat, and pulling out her chair for her if the wait staff don’t do it for her.
  6. Who pays? It’s Valentines Day, so the man should pay the bill, unless the woman extended the invitation.
